Maybe in the future at least subscribed users can receive a notification message as to which lists on their watchlist have been modified. Similar to IMDb list updates, but actually useful?

Yes, this feature has been planned. The watchlist option for lists will be changed to a follow-this-list option and you’ll receive notifications when a list is updated.
