Poll: Lists that should be official: nominations due April 29

Third nomination:

BFI: 100 thrillers to see before you die
https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/bfi+100+thrillers+to+see+before+you+die/espjoh/
100 films (A-Z)
Selected by the British Film Institute.

I nominate:

BIFF’s Asian Cinema 100 (2015)
https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/biffs+asian+cinema+100/mjf314/
115 films, ranked
“The ‘Asian Cinema 100’ is a collaboration project with the Busan International Film Festival and the Busan Cinema Center to shed light on the values of Asian film. The list will be updated every 5 years to act as a guide for the aesthetic value and history of Asian cinema and to discover hidden masterpieces and talented directors of Asia.
For the project, 73 prominent film professionals at home and abroad included film critics such as Jonathan Rosenbaum, Tony Rayns, Hasumi Shigehiko, and renowned festival executives, programmers, and directors Mohsen Makhmalbaf, Bong Joon-ho, and Apichatpong Weerasethakul. They recommended their top 10 films, resulting in 113 selections and 106 directors (including joint rankings) for the final 100 list.”

Abraccine’s 100 Best Brazilian Films (2015)
https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/the+100+best+brazilian+films/baalman/
100 movies, ranked
“Made by Abraccine (Brazilian Association of Cinema Critics) based on the personal lists of its associates.”

BBC’s The 100 Greatest American Films (2015)
https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/bbc+cultures+100+greatest+american+films/monoglot/
100 movies, ranked
“In July 2015, BBC Culture polled 62 international film critics from around the world to determine the best American movies ever made.”

Making Pictures: A Century of European Cinematography (2003)
https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/making+pictures+a+century+of+european+cinematography/edward5
99 films (Chronological)
A list of 99 European films selected by Imago, European Federation of Cinematographers, originally published in the 2003 book “Making Pictures: A Century of European Cinematography”.
This list would create 8 new official checks.

The Celluloid Closet: The Documentary (1995)
https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/the+celluloid+closet+the+documentary/moviedearest/
119 films (Chronological)
This list consists of the 117 movies featured in the 1995 compilation documentary “The Celluloid Closet”.
This list would create 40 new official checks.

The Advocate’s Top 175 Essential Films of All Time for LGBT Viewers (2014)
https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/the+advocates+top+175+essential+films+of+all+time+for+lgbt+viewers/moviedearest
175 films (ranked)
The Advocate’s Staff was asked for a top 10, then we asked readers for theirs, and finally began the arguing — always politely. Television movies and television series aren’t included. The result is potentially a guide for anyone who wants to examine our roots through film.
This list would create 59 new official checks.

@TreadwayNathan The SonntagsZeitung Top 100 Swiss Films list has been updated to reflect the 2016 poll

I like that your lists start from the pre-sound era, and would be happy with any list of historical box office hits that people would find easy to use. We have lists like all time box office that caters mostly for films of today, i would just like to see a list for the older films as well.

My first 2 nominations (I’m still thinking about my 3rd nomination).

Time Out New York’s The 100 Best Action Movies (2014)
https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/time+outs+100+best+action+movies/senorroboto/
101 films (ranked)
Voted by 50 actors, directors, stunt performers, critics, and experts. I think this list would be a better guide for people who are new to the genre, compared to the action A-Z list.

Rushprint’s Best Norwegian Films (2011)
https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/rushprints+best+norwegian+films/mjf314/
82 films (ranked)
Voted by 32 critics and managers of festivals and cinematheques. It was published as a top 25, but they also published the ballots, so this is the full list which I compiled from the ballots.

A lot of titles on the bottom have only 1 vote. I think you should remove those at least.

I’m worried that people who are hoping for a longer Norwegian list might be unsatisfied with a top 51, so a top 82 might have better chances in the poll. I just posted about it on the iCM forum to get more opinions.

Deadline is over. With the mods we’ll start sorting all the lists and preparing the next steps.

I agree. Why not simply vote over the original list? It was already nominated in this thread by @72allinncallme, here.

@mjf314 And to be honest I really don’t understand why one of the list moderators, who should primarily be looking for quality lists and list quality, can propose including simply every individual film from every individual ballot from a poll in lists like these. It makes the poll completely meaningless, and basically turns the list into a critics list without the benefit of the critics being acclaimed or well-known.

Cheers! Thanks!

@George_Eastman: I didn’t add the Flickchart whodunit list because it’s not on iCM. Also since it’s based on user rankings, keeping it updated will be difficult. If someone wants to add it to iCM then I’ll add it.
@fear_of_13: I added your nominations.
@sg23: I didn’t add your nomination because it’s not the latest version of the list.
@VVKT: Both of your nominations have already been nominated.
@andthensome: I added your nominations.
@Samlion: I added your first 2 nominations. Your 3rd and 4th nomination have already been nominated.
@AB537: All of your nominations have already been nominated.
@Baalman, @Euky27: I added your nominations.

The spreadsheet is updated up to post 149.

@zzzorf, @flaiky, @muzzlehatch, @frbrown, @TreadwayNathan, @sol, @max-scl: I added your nominations.
@unterwasser: I added your first nomination. Your second nomination has already been nominated.

The spreadsheet is updated up to post 171.

@Gershwin: The Academy Award cinatography nominations list includes some foreign-language films, but not a lot. I think the American Cinematographer lists include more foreign-language films, but I didn’t count so I could be wrong.

@ezhevod, @Panunzio, @sol, @flaiky, @Lonewolf2003, @Lindsey: I added your nominations.
@MovieDearest: I added your nominations. Your documentary list is private. Please make it public.
@mjf314: I added my nominations. For the Norwegian list I changed my nomination to be only the top 51 (all films with at least 2 votes).

@mjf314

The bottom two lists in the spreadsheet, Wim Wenders’ and Park Chan-wook’s ideal film collections, both link to Agnes Varda’s list.

Oops, fixed :slight_smile:

I fixed it. Thanks.
